A Question We Hear Often
“Is it okay to get acupuncture when I have a cold?” This is one of our most frequently asked questions. And this time of year, we’re getting more cancellation calls with the message: “I caught a cold — should I skip my appointment?”
Of course, if you have a high fever and can barely move, rest comes first. But for a mild cold, I actually believe acupuncture can speed up recovery. Many patients experience their fever dropping or their body feeling noticeably lighter after a session.
The Body’s Reset Switch
As I wrote in the previous blog, a cold isn’t a sign that your body has weakened — it’s a sign that your body has activated its reset switch.
When you’re coming down with a cold, the fatigue and physical habits you’ve been masking tend to surface. It’s actually a prime opportunity to address them.
Wisdom from Haruchika Noguchi
In his book “The Utility of the Common Cold,” Noguchi wrote that colds don’t just “spread” to everyone — they occur in people whose bodies are in a state that needs them.
While this differs from modern medical explanations, the perspective of viewing the body’s reactions as meaningful changes — rather than problems to suppress — is deeply valuable.
How Acupuncture Helps During a Cold
Acupuncture releases muscle tension and improves fascial gliding, which helps:
– Breathing become easier — less restriction in the chest and diaphragm
– Autonomic nervous system switching — helping the body shift into recovery mode
– Faster overall recovery — supporting the body’s natural healing process
Know When to Rest
This doesn’t mean you should push through no matter what. If you’re experiencing:
– Severe fatigue
– Difficulty breathing
– Persistent high fever
…then rest is the priority.
But for early-stage colds or mild symptoms, acupuncture can be a powerful ally. Rather than thinking “I have a cold, so I should cancel,” consider: this might be the perfect time to get tuned up.
A cold isn’t just a setback — it’s an invitation to listen to your body. If you’re unsure whether to come in or rest, just reach out! We’ll help you decide together.
Before You Visit…
Fair warning: our English is a work in progress! (Ha!)
But thanks to the magic of translation apps, we communicate just fine with patients from around the world.
Your body speaks a universal language — and that’s the one we’re fluent in.
