Welcome to Part 3 of our series! Today’s theme is “Fascia and the Nervous System.” Let’s learn alongside Fascia-chan, the specialist living inside your body!
Fascia-chan says: “Hey hey! Today I’m going to explain how stress, fascia, and the nervous system are all connected!”
Mind and Body Are One
At our clinic, we often hear patients say, “Things got worse after I started feeling stressed.” In traditional Eastern medicine, there’s a concept called “shinshin ichinyo” — meaning the mind and body are inseparable.
Fascia-chan says: “I totally get that! I’m like a communication relay between the nerves — I pick up on both emotional changes and physical movement!”
Fascia is home to many free nerve endings — sensors that detect pain and sensation. In other words, fascia isn’t just a membrane — it’s an information network that works closely with your nerves.
Fascia-chan says: “When the conversation between me and the nerves is flowing smoothly, your body moves well and you barely feel pain! But when stress builds up…”
The Stiffness Spiral
When stress continues, the sympathetic nervous system kicks into overdrive, muscles tighten, and blood flow decreases.
Fascia-chan says: “Then I start getting all stiff and squeezed, and I accidentally send ‘wrong signals’ to the nerves…”
What should be harmless stimulation starts to feel “painful,” and the nerves themselves become hypersensitive — reacting to even the slightest touch.
Fascia-chan says: “If this goes on too long, you can get trapped in a stiffness spiral: Pain → Anxiety → Can’t sleep → More stiffness → Even more pain!”
Research has even shown that in people with chronic pain, the density of pain-sensing nerves in fascia actually increases.
Caring for Both Body and Mind
Fascia-chan says: “That’s why I think taking care of your mind is just as important as taking care of your body. I want to create an environment where the nerves feel safe!”
Exactly. At our clinic, we value acupuncture treatments that release tension around the head and neck, as well as approaches that balance the autonomic nervous system. We also focus on creating a space where patients feel at ease.
Fascia-chan says: “Mind and body really are connected! The ancient saying ‘shinshin ichinyo’ — those old-timers were onto something!”
Did you start to see how stress turns into pain? Next time is the series finale — we’ll talk about “Fascia and Water.”
Before You Visit…
Fair warning: our English is a work in progress! (Ha!)
But thanks to the magic of translation apps, we communicate just fine with patients from around the world.
Your body speaks a universal language — and that’s the one we’re fluent in.
